Warehouse Floor Load Capacity Guide

Updated: March 1, 2026

What floor load capacity does a warehouse need?

The standard floor load capacity for Class A warehouses in Latvia is 5–8 t/m², which is sufficient for high-bay racking with 5+ pallet levels. Heavy-industry warehouses may require 10+ t/m². Class B warehouses typically offer 3–5 t/m².

  • Class A: 5–8 t/m²
  • Class B: 3–5 t/m²
  • Heavy industry: 10+ t/m²
  • VNA racking: min. 5 t/m²

Floor load capacity determines how much weight can be placed on each square metre of the warehouse floor. It is a critical parameter for racking system design and heavy equipment placement.

Why does floor load capacity matter?

Insufficient floor load capacity can cause floor cracking, racking instability and safety hazards. Before leasing a warehouse it is important to verify that the floor load meets the requirements of your racking system and goods weight.

Floor load standards by class

Class A: 5–8 t/m² — suitable for high-bay racking, VNA systems and heavy inventory.

Class B: 3–5 t/m² — sufficient for standard racking systems with 3–4 levels.

Class C: 1.5–3 t/m² — limited, typically suitable only for light inventory without racking.

How to verify floor load capacity

Floor load information is usually available in the warehouse’s technical passport. If it is not available, a floor load test can be performed with specialised equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What floor load capacity is needed for a VNA racking system?

A VNA (Very Narrow Aisle) racking system requires a minimum floor load of 5 t/m². For heavy inventory, 6–8 t/m² is recommended. VNA systems create concentrated point loads through the racking legs.

Can the floor load capacity of an existing warehouse be increased?

In theory yes, by reinforcing the floor or adding an additional concrete layer, but it is expensive (€30–€80/m²) and requires the warehouse to be closed temporarily. It is usually more cost-effective to find a warehouse with the right floor load capacity.
